Crockpot Apple Crisp (Print Page)

Warm spiced apples with buttery oat topping, slowly cooked to tender perfection.

# What You Need:

→ Apple Filling

01 - 6 cups peeled, cored, and sliced apples (about 6 medium apples, preferably Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
02 - 1/2 cup granulated sugar
03 - 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
04 - 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
05 - 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
06 - 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
07 - 1 tablespoon lemon juice
08 - Pinch of salt

→ Crisp Topping

09 - 1 cup old-fashioned oats
10 - 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
11 - 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
12 - 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into cubes
13 - 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
14 - 1/4 teaspoon salt

# Directions:

01 - Combine sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and salt in a large bowl. Toss until apples are thoroughly coated with the spice mixture.
02 - Transfer the coated apple mixture to a lightly greased 4-quart or larger crockpot, spreading into an even layer across the bottom.
03 - Mix oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt in a separate bowl. Add cold cubed butter and rub into dry ingredients using fingertips or a pastry cutter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces remaining.
04 - Sprinkle the oat crumble mixture evenly over the apples, covering completely.
05 - Cover and cook on HIGH heat for 2 to 2 1/2 hours, or on LOW heat for 3 1/2 to 4 hours, until apples are tender when pierced and topping is golden brown.
06 - For a crunchier texture, remove lid during the final 30 minutes of cooking time to allow steam to escape and topping to crisp further.
07 - Serve warm directly from the slow cooker, optionally topped with vanilla ice cream or freshly whipped cream.

# Expert Tips:

01 -
  • Your kitchen will smell incredible for hours without you doing any work
  • The topping stays perfectly buttery and crisp, never soggy like oven versions can get
  • It is practically impossible to mess up, even if you are new to desserts
02 -
  • Leaving the lid off for the final 30 minutes is the difference between mushy and magically crispy topping
  • Mixing tart and sweet apple varieties creates way more flavor than using just one type
  • Your crockpot runs hotter than mine, so check at 2 hours on HIGH to avoid overcooking
03 -
  • Use a pastry cutter if you have one, but clean fingertips work beautifully for incorporating that butter
  • Lightly grease your crockpot with butter instead of oil for extra flavor
